The Witches of Serna
Book I of the War of the Mountains
It was supposed to be a quiet life. Mundane. Dareum Covendran and his sister Judane would soon find spouses for themselves, take titles, and enjoy a quiet life. But this is not what happened. When orcs raid their town for the first time in generations, they will have to choose between fighting a battle they cannot win, trusting strange travelers they do not know, waiting for help that may not come, or embracing heresy, whatever consequences may come.
Reviews:
· I love the world and character building in this book. The good, bad, and ugly parts of life are depicted in the story and that is much appreciated. Not every hard moment in life can be glossed over. I cannot wait for the next book.
· This story is the first part of an epic war adventure following multiple perspectives and offering large world-building throughout. It reminds me of Lord of the Rings in terms of scale (of the war, races, and world) and in the sense that this is a heavily plot-driven novel… For anyone who loves a huge world with diverse characters and lots of strategy and politics of war, this series is for you.
· Witches of Serna is an engaging, atmospheric fantasy that pulls you into its world from the first few chapters. The author blends magic, mystery, and character-driven storytelling in a way that feels both familiar to the genre and refreshingly unique. The setting of Serna is rich without being overwhelming, and the magical elements unfold at a pace that keeps you curious without ever feeling lost. The characters are the heart of the story. Each feels distinct, with motivations and flaws that make their arcs believable. Even the supporting cast adds texture to the world, giving the sense that Serna is a living place with history, tension, and its own quiet politics. The interpersonal dynamics—loyalty, conflict, secrecy—are where the book really shines… The story builds momentum toward a satisfying conclusion that leaves room for more without feeling unfinished. The writing itself is accessible but vivid, and the author’s talent for creating mood—sometimes eerie, sometimes warm—adds a layer of depth that lingers after the final chapter.
· I love the world and character building in this book. The good, bad, and ugly parts of life are depicted in the story and that is much appreciated. Not every hard moment in life can be glossed over. I cannot wait for the next book.
Unseen Wrath
Book II of the War of the Mountains
Anger grips. A young fool rises in the air, crushed by an invisible claw, controlled by an unknown man. And when the fool’s body falls, no one else is around to hear it. No one who will say, at least…
Reviews:
· At first, I was a bit intimidated by these books, but I am glad I gave these books a shot. The complexities of war and decisions made in war, especially when there seems to be a battle happening on every front. Highly enjoyable, perfectly paced, and had my heart racing at points. As with all the books that have become my favorite, I am going to have to read through more than once to pick up on things I missed.
· I just got done with Morgan Spring-Glace's second book, Unseen Wrath, and it did not disappoint. The story kicks off with a bang, dropping the reader into the middle of a dramatic underground siege and just pulls them along from there like a Yugo caught in the draft of a semi-truck. He continues to expand the world he started in the first of the series, with the same wonderful depth of details and world-building. This book introduces several new characters and races, and for me, I was surprised at how much I identified with a few in particular. Of note, Mr. Spring-Glace does something I've never seen in a fantasy novel. Instead of placing one map somewhere at the start of the story, he conveniently places the highly detailed maps where they are relevant to the storyline so the reader doesn't have to flip back to get a picture of where the action is occurring. Absolutely brilliant! The same goes with the book's numerous illustrations, which one rarely if ever sees in a work of this type and size. And, as a generous bonus to the reader who wants to know more, he includes an almost Tolkien-esque set of appendices at the end with detailed information about the peoples and lands of the world he created… Epic battles, political intrigue, blossoming magic and well written and engaging characters, this book is the kind that will distract you from things you have to get done. Caveat emptor, in the best possible way!
